Many people believe in a fallen angel who whispers in our ears and tempts us to sin. This booklet asks what the Bible writers meant by "devil" and "Satan". In Hebrew, "satan" simply means an adversary, and the Bible applies it to men and even to a good angel. Jesus called Peter "Satan" when Peter opposed God's will. The Greek word for "devil" means a slanderer. Hebrews 2:14 shows that Jesus destroyed the devil through his own death, and Hebrews 9:26 says he did this to put away sin. The real devil, then, is sin within our own hearts. This truth stops us blaming others and shows how much we need the salvation God offers through His Son.
